July theme for Cortez Library Storytime is ‘Craving Sleep’



“Craving Sleep” is the July theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays. The Saturday Storytime is held, weather permitting, at the Cortez Farmers Market on the corner of Elm and Main St. All days of any particular week will follow the same theme except on Thursdays and Saturdays there will be no craft. “Night Lights” will be discussed on Saturday, July 14. “Counting Sheep” will be presented on Thursday, July 19, Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. “Hush Little Baby” will wrap up the month on Thursday, July 26, Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28.

Acoustic duo ‘Roscoe’ plays in Dolores



“Roscoe,” the acoustic duo of Herb Folsom and Tony Littlejohn, will play in Dolores at Riverfront Pizza, 1319 Railroad Ave., on Saturday, July 14 and 21 at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 533-7943.




Day lily plant sale will benefit Mancos Library



The Mancos Friends of the Library and Holly Cruser will present a Day Lily Plant Sale at her plant nursery on Saturday, July 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Mancos Public Library landscaping projects. The location is at 10405 Road 41.4, Mancos, in the Sun West Estates north of Mancos and east of Highway 184. Carpooling is recommended; look for the balloons, and refreshments will be provided as you browse the gardens. Prices are $5/double plant and there are discounts for bulk buying. Holly’s plants are National Award Winners and there are over 65 varieties currently in bloom. After the sale Holly will dig and label the plants and deliver them to the library for pickup on Sunday, July 15. Printed planting instructions and tips are included with each sale. Musicians, singers invited



to take part in Gospel Music Fest

Montelores Baptist Church will host a Gospel Music Fest on Saturday, July 14 from noon to 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to come for an afternoon of great Gospel Music. Various local groups and musicians will perform inside the church’s beautiful, air-conditioned facility. Refreshments will be available to purchase, including hot dogs, Navajo tacos, chips, and sodas. Montelores Baptist Church is located at 18735 Rd. 23.5 (off Hwy. 184 and across from Narriguinnep Reservoir). Hellbound Glory from Reno



plays the Hollywood

On Saturday, July 14, the Hollywood Bar and Grill, 417 Central Ave., Dolores, will host Hellbound Glory from Reno, Nevada. Their flavor of scumbag country — featuring songs of love, heartbreak and destruction — are making them one of the bands in country to be reckoned with. Having played with the likes of David Allan Coe and Kid Rock, the band is going to bring a rockin’ time right here to Dolores! Show begins at 9 p.m.; tickets are $7. Navajo taco lunch at Dolores Community Center



Dolores United Methodist Church will hold a Navajo Taco Lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave. Adults are $7, children 10 years old and under eat for $3. Flower Show Design Workshop



The Mesa Verde Gardeners will host a Design Workshop in advance of the Montezuma County Fair and Flower Show. Helen Pruski, a design judge from Durango, will give interested participants a class focusing on petite designs and basic design elements to better prepare for the show which runs from Aug. 2-4. The class will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, July 16 at 29204 County Road M. Anyone who is interested in flower design is welcome to attend. We especially encourage youth and novice arrangers. Fair booklets with complete rules for submitting a design are available at the Montezuma County Extension Office. Family Cowboy Days & Vacation Bible School



Southwest Cowboy Church will present Family Cowboy Days with Vacation Bible School for kids at Baptist Chapel, 1509 N. Dolores Rd., Cortez. Join them Monday through Thursday, July 16-19 for four days of fun featuring Dewey Stanford and friends. The offerings for kids age 4-12 will be from 10 a.m. to noon and will include a stick horse rodeo, pole bending barrel racing, flag relay, dummy calf roping, and Bible teaching and songs. Each day’s events for families are from 6 to 8 p.m. and will include round pen clinic, special teaching, and big barbecues. Bird-Brained Kids Camp at Denny Lake



Birds are beautiful and interesting wildlife that we see every day! Learn about amazing bird adaptations, habits and habitats with fun activities and games in this free camp at Denny Lake in Cortez. Camp takes place from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, July 16–19. Children ages 6 to 10 are welcome, and pre-registration is required. Summer Enrichment Programs



at Medicine Horse

Medicine Horse Equine Therapy Center are holding their Summer Enrichment Programs. Kids ages 7 through 12 will learn about horses and how to take care of them, learn how to ride bareback, do art projects, make horse treats and just have fun with horses. The beginning skills camp runs from Monday through Friday, July 16-20. The advanced skills camp runs from Aug. 6-10. Both camps are from 9 a.m. to noon. ‘Amazing Wonders Aviation’



Vacation Bible School

Mountain View Baptist Church of Dolores invites any child between the ages of 3 years old and 6th grade to join us for fun at the “Amazing Wonders Aviation” Vacation Bible School to encounter God’s awesome powers. The adventure begins Monday through Friday, July 16-20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Come join us as we fly to some of the world’s greatest natural wonders and encounter God’s awesome power. As we fly around the world, kids will take off from worship at The Worship Rally Hangar and make their first stop at the stunning Victoria Falls for Bible study and enjoy dinner at the Paricutin Volcano. Second class of ‘Marketing for Smarties’ business marketing series



The second and third classes of the Marketing for Smarties Series will take place at the Welcome Center in Cortez, 928 E. Main St., on Wednesday, July 18, and Wednesday, Aug. 15. Classes are from 1 to 5 p.m. This 3-part series breaks marketing down into a step-by-step process, and helps to resolve a lot of the problems many small businesses encounter when trying to effectively promote their products and services. Hummingbird Monitoring Network presentation



The San Juan Mountains Association, in conjunction with the Cortez Cultural Center, will host a Member Series Presentation by Susan Wethington, PhD, on Wednesday, July 18 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St. Ms. Wethington is the Executive Director of the Hummingbird Monitoring Network (HMN) and has a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and an MA in Mathematics from the University of Arizona. Since 2002, the Hummingbird Monitoring Network has monitored hummingbird populations at a variety of sites throughout western North America. Susan will discuss patterns of hummingbird occurrence, diversity, and abundance at these sites with a focus on hummingbirds occurring in southwestern Colorado. She will also describe key conservation issues facing hummingbirds, such as climate change and habitat loss, and how results from HMN’s monitoring work are helping. Barbershop Quartet to perform at Entertainment Series



The Durango Barbershop Quartet is the final group performing in the Cortez Public Library’s Summer Reading Program Family Entertainment Series on Wednesday, July 18, at 2 p.m. The library is located at 202 N. Park St. The quartet is a select group from the Durango Barbershop Chorus. They’re bringing harmony to our library and will sing many popular favorites and sleepytime songs for you to dream on. Cowboy entertainer Stamey to perform House Concert



Nationally-acclaimed cowboy entertainer Dave Stamey will perform on Wednesday, July 18 at Western Belle’s House Concert Series at 32229 Road P, Mancos. Come at 7 p.m. for a potluck (bring your favorite dish to share), and music begins at 8 p.m. The director of the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festivals says, “Stamey is one of the best Western songwriters alive today; his melodies blend perfectly with his lyrics to the point where you can almost feel the wind against your face and smell the soft scent of the sage. Democratic Party to hold Get Together Potluck Fundraiser



The Montezuma County Democratic Party will have a “Get Together Potluck Fundraiser” on Thursday, July 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cliffrose Nursery, 27885 Hwy. 160, Cortez. Anger Management classes



CARS/TRC will offer a 12-week Anger Management class starting on Thursday, July 19. Classes are two hours per week. Learn the roots of your anger, learn skills to manage your feelings, learn how to prevent outbursts and improve your relationships. CARS/TRC is at 35 N. Ash St. in Cortez. Effective July 1, CARS’ new name is The Recovery Center: A Behavioral Health Organization (TRC). Call 565-4109 to set up an intake appointment.




Cortez Library July computer classes



The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will offer a series of computer training classes in July. All classes start at 1 p.m. On Thursday, July 19, a basic Word class will be taught, and on Friday, July 27, a class on the various aspects of finding a job on the Internet will be held. All classes must be signed up for ahead of time, as space is limited. Sign up by calling the library at 565-8117 or by stopping by.




‘A Night Out’ fundraiser for Bridge Emergency Shelter



A Night Out, Friday, July 20, is the Bridge Emergency Shelter’s summer fundraising event. This is the day and/or night to eat out for the shelter! There are 35 restaurants in Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos who are participating in our event this year by donating a percentage of their sales that day to the Bridge. Free t-shirts are available for 100 folks who eat out! Go as a group of friends, co-workers, or family. Eat out for the shelter on July 20! Vanishing Breed to perform at Hollywood’s Earl benefit



On Saturday afternoon, July 21, The Hollywood Bar and Grill, 417 Central Ave., Dolores, will host a benefit for our friend Dan Earls, who was injured in a construction accident. We will have a buffet, silent auction and live music from Hollywood favorites, Vanishing Breed. Music begins at 1 p.m. All proceeds will go to help Dan with medical bills from several surgeries. ‘Fierce Grace’ will screen at Conscious Movie Night



The Center of Light presents “Fierce Grace” at Conscious Movie Night on Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m. at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 Road 31 (in Dolores turn left on 11th at the Riverside Gas Station, go 1.8 miles. Look for the large sign with the dove, on the left). “Fierce Grace” documents Ram Dass remaking his life since suffering from a stroke. While the illness might have broken others, it provided Dass with a new passion: using an unexpected, uninvited challenge as a tool for spiritual transformation, and using what he learns to help others face issues of aging, death and dying. This event is free, and all are welcome. Donations are accepted and will support the Seva Foundation. Seva is a sanskrit word meaning service to others. Since 1978, Seva has been a leading innovator in building partnerships that deliver cost-effective, culturally informed health service for some of the world’s most vulnerable — including women, children and indigenous peoples. ‘Ethical Issues in Advanced Illness’ training



Hospice of Montezuma and Life Quality Institute will sponsor a training conference “Ethical Issues in Advanced Illness” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31 at the Cortez Conference Center, 2121 E. Main St. Attendees should register by Friday, July 20. The cost is $35 for breakfast, lunch and training. Topics will include: Raising Your Ethical Antennae; Getting the most out of the Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment; and Palliative Sedation: Extreme Symptom Management or Veiled Assisted Death?
