July theme for Cortez Library Storytime is Craving Sleep
Craving Sleep is the July theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays. The Saturday Storytime is held, weather permitting, at the Cortez Farmers Market on the corner of Elm and Main St. All days of any particular week will follow the same theme except on Thursdays and Saturdays there will be no craft. Counting Sheep will be presented on Thursday, July 19, Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. Hush Little Baby will wrap up the month on Thursday, July 26, Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28.

Second class of Marketing for Smarties business marketing series
The second and third classes of the Marketing for Smarties Series will take place at the Welcome Center in Cortez, 928 E. Main St., on Wednesday, July 18, and Wednesday, Aug. 15. Classes are from 1 to 5 p.m. This 3-part series breaks marketing down into a step-by-step process, and helps to resolve a lot of the problems many small businesses encounter when trying to effectively promote their products and services. Hummingbird Monitoring Network presentation
The San Juan Mountains Association, in conjunction with the Cortez Cultural Center, will host a Member Series Presentation by Susan Wethington, PhD, on Wednesday, July 18 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St. Ms. Wethington is the Executive Director of the Hummingbird Monitoring Network (HMN) and has a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and an MA in Mathematics from the University of Arizona. Since 2002, the Hummingbird Monitoring Network has monitored hummingbird populations at a variety of sites throughout western North America. Susan will discuss patterns of hummingbird occurrence, diversity, and abundance at these sites with a focus on hummingbirds occurring in southwestern Colorado. She will also describe key conservation issues facing hummingbirds, such as climate change and habitat loss, and how results from HMNs monitoring work are helping. The Durango Barbershop Quartet is the final group performing in the Cortez Public Librarys Summer Reading Program Family Entertainment Series on Wednesday, July 18, at 2 p.m. The library is located at 202 N. Cowboy entertainer Stamey to perform House Concert
Nationally-acclaimed cowboy entertainer Dave Stamey will perform on Wednesday, July 18 at Western Belles House Concert Series at 32229 Road P, Mancos. Dance, Dive-In Movie for kids at outdoor pool
The City of Cortez and the Cortez Police Department invites middle school and elementary students to the free Dive-In Movie on Thursday, July 19 at the Cortez outdoor swimming pool. First, there will be music at the pool from 6 to 8 p.m. where you can dance or just hang out with your friends; next, the Dive-In Movie will start at 8:30 and go to 10 p.m. Watch a movie on a huge screen from the cool comfort of the pool bring floaties, air mattresses, pool chairs, inner tubes, or whatever floats. Since it gets cooler at night, attendees are urged to bring an extra towel or some clothes. This is a DARE-sponsored event.
Democratic Party to hold Get Together Potluck Fundraiser

Anger Management classes
CARS/TRC will offer a 12-week Anger Management class starting on Thursday, July 19. Classes are two hours per week. Learn the roots of your anger, learn skills to manage your feelings, learn how to prevent outbursts and improve your relationships. CARS/TRC is at 35 N. Ash St. in Cortez. Cortez Library July computer classes
The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will offer a series of computer training classes in July. All classes start at 1 p.m. On Thursday, July 19, a basic Word class will be taught, and on Friday, July 27, a class on the various aspects of finding a job on the Internet will be held. A Night Out fundraiser for Bridge Emergency Shelter
A Night Out, Friday, July 20, is the Bridge Emergency Shelters summer fundraising event. This is the day and/or night to eat out for the shelter! There are 35 restaurants in Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos who are participating in our event this year by donating a percentage of their sales that day to the Bridge. On Saturday afternoon, July 21, The Hollywood Bar and Grill, 417 Central Ave., Dolores, will host a benefit for our friend Dan Earls, who was injured in a construction accident. We will have a buffet, silent auction and live music from Hollywood favorites, Vanishing Breed. Music begins at 1 p.m. All proceeds will go to help Dan with medical bills from several surgeries. Fierce Grace will screen at Conscious Movie Night
The Center of Light presents Fierce Grace at Conscious Movie Night on Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m. at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 Road 31 (in Dolores turn left on 11th at the Riverside Gas Station, go 1.8 miles. Look for the large sign with the dove, on the left). Fierce Grace documents Ram Dass remaking his life since suffering from a stroke. While the illness might have broken others, it provided Dass with a new passion: using an unexpected, uninvited challenge as a tool for spiritual transformation, and using what he learns to help others face issues of aging, death and dying. This event is free, and all are welcome. Donations are accepted and will support the Seva Foundation. Seva is a sanskrit word meaning service to others.
