Unseasonably warm and dry weather conditions are delaying the opening of Hesperus Ski Area.
“Hesperus will open for the ski season as soon as we have sufficient snow,” Ben Beresford, Hesperus Ski Area vice president of operations, said in a news release.
The ski area had planned to open Dec. 15.
Hesperus Ski Area lacks a snow-making infrastructure, relies on natural snowfall and will open when conditions allow.
“While our winter season has been delayed this year, our team at Hesperus is excited and ready to start the season. We just have to be a little more patient this year,” Beresford added. “Hesperus has an exciting season planned with new additions, events, and improvements at the mountain.”
Crews will continue to mow grass and prepare the mountain for the skiing and snowboarding until opening day. Lift access is available for $25 while the ski area is closed. To purchase an uphill season pass, visit Purgatory Sports, 2615 Main Ave.
Hesperus Ski Area offers 26 trails on 160 acres, accessible by a two-person chairlift, and night skiing. This season, the ski area plans to offer additional lighting for night skiing; a new yurt for the “Learn to Ski and Snowboard” center; an expanded rental shop with upgraded equipment; an improved software system and renovated cafe at the Day Lodge; ski bike rentals; and ski and snowboard demos.
Children 7 and younger, seniors 70 and older, and fourth- and fifth-grade students receive free lift tickets.
