The start of a new collegiate academic year is always an exciting and highly-anticipated time for students and staff. It was especially so Monday for those on hand at Pueblo Community College’s Southwest Colorado Community College branches in Durango and Mancos.

Both SCCC campus sites conducted what has become a traditional “First Step to Success” Celebration Walk. Along with words of welcome that precede it, the “Walk” symbolizes students taking an initial step on their life-changing educational journey. Free maroon “Panther Pride” T-shirts as well as sunglasses had been distributed to students earlier that morning.

Students at the Mancos/Cortez site gathered in the Commons area of the building and were welcomed by Rocky Moss, Associated Student Government sponsor and Coordinator of Recruitment, as well as ASG officers Kal Pinnecoose, Kerri Matteson, Crystal Bynum and Amber Gipe.

Interim Executive Dean Cindy Mihelich, speaking on behalf of PCC President Patty Erjavec, welcomed students and explained the meaning of “First Step to Success” and noted that the free sunglasses were needed because the futures of the students were so bright. The Celebration Walk followed around the building, with faculty and staff applauding students along the way. After posing for a group photo, the gathering moved to the Commons area and celebrated with yogurt, muffins and friendship.

“Our annual “Celebration Walk” gives faculty and staff a great opportunity to welcome our students to a new academic year,” said Erjavec. “The excitement and energy could be felt throughout the college as we anticipate the success and encourage the potential of all.”
