W. D. Bridgewater, 60, a resident of the Mildred neighborhood about eight miles southwest of Dolores, shot and instantly killed his stepson, Wm. Beeler, about one oclock yesterday afternoon after Beeler had threatened to kill his mother and stepfather with a razor. It is stated that Beeler had served eighteen years in the Oklahoma penitentiary and recently Bridgewater had succeeded in getting him paroled.
Yesterday it is said that as the family was seated at dinner a quarrel started and Beeler menaced the family with a razor when Bridgewater stepped into a room and picked up a shotgun.
After the shooting Bridgewater telephoned Sheriff Dunlap, told what he had done and asked that he be taken into custody.

Final plans for the opening of the Dolores schools September 6 were made at a meeting of the board held Tuesday evening of this week. The most important step taken was to cut tuition for high school and grades in half, that is: Charges for students entering from out of the district will be $5 per month for high school and junior high school grades and $2.50 per month for grades up to and including the sixth grade. More rigid rules will be enforced as regards those who are to pay tuition and all fees must be paid three months in advance.

Silvano Hernandez, native of Old Mexico, who was arrested following a fight at McPhee the night of August 15 in which Alfredo Herrera was stabbed and subsequently died, pleaded guilty to second degree murder before Judge John B. ORourke at Cortez Monday afternoon, and was sentenced to 10 to 18 years in the penitentiary.

Montezuma County Chapter, American Red Cross, takes this means of thanking all who have helped in relief work during the season. The cotton clothing has been requested. Ample notice will be given when it has arrived and is ready for distribution. Only those who are in dire need and are unable to get credit should make their appearance.

Supervisor A. F. Hoffman was in from Dove Creek yesterday and reported work on the two roads the service is building northeast of that section is progressing nicely. One road is being built northeast of Dove Creek to the pine timber near the Dolores river canon rim, while the other starts ten miles north of Dove Creek and leads into the pine timber. These roads are being built by hand labor as much as possible and are to make the forests more accessible in case of fire.
