Unpledged delegate

(Supports Ron Paul)

At age 21, Luke Kirk will be one of the youngest delegates to the Republican National Convention.

He’s also a member of the youth movement that makes up much of the dedicated base of supporters of 77-year-old Texas congressman Ron Paul.

Kirk does electrical work on natural gas pumpjacks and compressor stations in the gas patch south of Durango. He and his family are old friends of State Rep. J. Paul Brown, and Kirk works on Brown’s campaign.

They part ways when it comes to their choice for president, though.

Kirk credits Rocky Mountain Gun Owners for helping him get elected as a national delegate. He and Todd King of Lewis ran on the same slate.

He knows Paul supporters will be outnumbered by Mitt Romney delegates in Tampa, but he thinks Paul delegates can help steer the Republican Party.

“We’ll do our best. We’ll vote and stay true to the end,” Kirk said.
