Delegate for Mitt Romney

A sheep rancher, Farm Bureau member, former member of the school board and La Plata County commission, and current state representative, J. Paul Brown has plenty of experience in politics.

To his surprise, he has added national convention delegate to that list.

Brown entered the state House in 2011 with a reputation as one of its most conservative freshman members, but he became a supporter of Mitt Romney last winter when Romney was seen as a moderate choice in the Republican primaries.

Brown has a competitive re-election race of his own against Democrat Mike McLachlan. He decided to run for national delegate at the state Republican convention in April, never thinking he would beat out some 900 other candidates. However, the Romney campaign put him on its official ticket, and he got elected.

He’s been grazing sheep above Lemon Reservoir —either with his wife, Debbie, or for his dad — since 1971. A few weeks after he returns from Tampa, he and his family and hired hands will drive their sheep herds down from the mountains and back to the ranch near Ignacio.

“Then we sort off the lambs and ship the lambs and do our fall work, then get ready to start the cycle all over again,” Brown said.
