The Montezuma-Cortez High School golf team placed fourth and sixth at two tournaments in Delta and Montrose last Wednesday and Thursday.

The Panthers shot 229 and 233 as a team at each tourney.

In Delta at Devil’s Thumb Golf Club, Jakob Rudosky shot 74 to lead the way. Other scores were Hayden Plewe, 76; Keith Hawkins, 79; Tristan Shelby, 79; and, Levi Gross, 84.

“We didn’t pay bad. Tristan Shelby shot in the 70s for the first time, which was great. It’s only his second year playing golf,” M-CHS coach Micah Rudosky said.

The Panthers got a feeling for where the 4A state tournament will be held at Cobble Creek Golf Course in Montrose.

“We got a nice feel for the course. We know the course. We’ve had a lot of practice at Cobble Creek,” coach Rudosky said.

It was Montrose High School that won on its course with a team total of 216. But the Indians and the rest of the 4A Western Slope Region know the road to state comes through Conquistador Golf Course at regionals.

“If we can get through regionals, I think we’ll have a couple guys under par for the two rounds there at state,” Micah Rudosky said. “But No. 1, it’s getting through our regional tournament. We got a good shot at it. We just have to be on our game. Our goal is to get four guys going to state.”

Scores at Cobble Creek were Jakob Rudosky, 73; Plewe, 80; Hawkins, 80; Shelby, 84; and, Gross, 92. “We got to see some of the competition out there and it was good. I think the kids were a little disappointed with the way they played at Cobble Creek, but it’s one round. We’ll have it behind them when we get out there (again),” Micah Rudosky said.

The Panthers are off this week before concluding the regular season next Monday and Tuesday in Durango at Hillcrest and Dalton Ranch Golf Clubs.

“We’ll be practicing hard. We got to get ready. It will be a nice little break from travel, but we got to get to work,” Micah Rudosky said.
