Originally, the only people allowed to vote in our country were men who owned property. It would take many decades and many sacrifices by hundreds of dedicated people to enact legislation which would ensure that no citizen over the age of 18 would be denied the right to vote.

We have a major election coming up on Nov. 7, which will give us the opportunity to express our right to vote on a variety of local and state issues as well as elect our next president. Currently, there are several proposals to change Colorado voter registration rules and regulations. These proposals are creating some confusion and misinformation among registered and as-yet-unregistered voters.

I would encourage anyone of voting age to check online at www.govotecolorado.com to learn more about what’s happening at the state level. If you are already a registered voter, it is an easy site to navigate to make sure that you truly are still registered.

If you have become accustomed to receiving a mail-in ballot, you can check your own registration form to make sure you are still on the list to receive a mail-in ballot. Take a moment to double-check that the address on your driver’s license and your address on the voter registration form are the same.

If you have not registered to vote, it is easy to do online at the above site.

The deadline for registering to vote is coming fast: Oct. 9. You can also visit the Montezuma County Clerk’s office at 140 W. Main (the old First National Bank building) to register or to make sure that you are still included on the voter’s list. Every vote does count. By taking the time to vote, you also honor those who fought hard to give us that privilege.
