Would it surprise you to learn that more than 2 out of 3 Americans are overweight or obese? Do you know how to determine if you or family members are at a healthy weight? Are there changes that our community needs to make to improve the health of Montezuma residents? Is there a link between what we eat, our food system and being overweight? Does being overweight mean you lack willpower or are there biological causes? Just because Colorado is the leanest state in the nation, are we immune?
Join Livewell Montezuma, Southwest Memorial Hospital and the Heart and Soul Project for a ground breaking and award winning series of 4 films created by HBO, Kaiser Permanente and the Institute of Medicine entitled The Weight of the Nation.
Obesity has become an epidemic that costs our nation nearly 147 billion dollars annually. As a country, we didnt just decide one morning to gain weight. The causes of the epidemic are complex; ranging from genetics and biology, to the environments we live and work in, to the business of food and farming in America and the food choices we make daily.
Learn more about these complex changes and the challenges we face by attending an evening of food, film and discussion. The series of 4 films, Consequences, Choices, Children in Crisis and Challenges, explore the topic from a wide variety of angles. Experts examine the factors that drive obesity in our bodies and in our communities and they look closely at obesitys effect on adults, children and our nation. A 45-minute discussion about local solutions will take place following each of the films.
The series will be shown in Cortez at the Methodist Church, Mancos Community Center and Dolores Community Center beginning September 17th and will continue bi-weekly until November 6th. Join us for a potluck with food from Eat Local, Eat Healthy restaurants and bring a dish to share from 5:45-6:30pm. Watch the film from 6:30-7:30 and stay for the discussion from 7:30-8:30. Or just come and see the film. There is no charge for attending. These screenings are funded by the Colorado Trust.
