Dolores River Anglers meeting



The Dolores River Anglers, a subcommittee of the 5 Rivers Chapter of Trout Unlimited, will be having a general meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 25, starting at 7 p.m., at the Cortez Elks Club. There will be a meet-and-greet from 6:30 to 7, and the meeting and program will start shortly thereafter. It’s taco Tuesday at the Elks Lodge and tacos can be purchased during the evening, while they last. The Dolores River Anglers will be discussing their strategic plan, as well as having guest speakers from the Pagosa Springs area. Dave Dunn, shop manager and head guide at Wolf Creek Anglers in Pagosa Springs, will be presenting some great images of the varied waters of the Pagosa area and imparting some of his secrets that can be used in this angler’s paradise. Dunn will also be joined by Wolf Creek Anglers owner Brad Shallenberger, who purchased Wolf Creek Anglers last year. Shallenberger will also impart on his local knowledge and big fish hiding areas. Come out to the meeting, and meet other local anglers with a passion for fishing and here about DRA’s plans for the coming year to include becoming Colorado’s 24th TU chapter later in the year.




M-CHS volleyball ‘Pink Game’



The Montezuma-Cortez High School volleyball “pink game,” for breast cancer awareness, will be Tuesday, Sept. 25, against Durango in the M-CHS Gym. The JV game starts at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity plays at 7. All proceeds will go to a local person fighting breast cancer or a group that helps support breast cancer patients. We are offering $1 off all admission tickets, if supporters wear pink to support the cause. Call coach Barbara Chappell at 570-9990 for more information.




M-CHS fall activities community carnival



A community carnival to introduce M-CHS activities and athletic teams will be Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Panther Stadium. For more information, please contact school activities director, Jimmie Lankford, at 565-3722 ex. 2123.




Area basketball officials needed



On Monday, Sept. 27, the Cortez Area Officials will be holding certification training for new officials from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Calvin Denton Room, located in the Empire Electric building. Anyone interested in becoming a referee for the Cortez and surrounding area, please contact Anthony Valdez at 799-1346.




Appleknocker Softball Rendezvous



Knocker Athletic Club is hosting the second annual Appleknocker Softball Rendezvous at Hartman & Riverside Parks in Aztec, N.M., on the weekend of Sept. 29-30. It’s coed and men’s brackets. Balls and bats provided, but people can swing own bats. It’s a three-game guarantee. Tourney entry fee is $170. Awards are based on number of teams. Champions win 14 Champion Dri-Fit shirts. Entry deadline is 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27. To register your team, call Charles See at 560-3423.




Hollywood Saturday pool tournaments



The Hollywood Saturday pool tournaments will be hosted at the American Legion Post 75, located at 320 North Harrison Street in Cortez. Play will be held there, until the rebuild of the Hollywood Bar in Dolores is complete. Tournament play begins Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. For more information, please call 565-8151.




Ute Mountain Rec. fall basketball league



The Ute Mountain Recreation Center in Towaoc is holding registration for its men’s and women’s open fall basketball league. Entry fee is $260 and it’s an eight game guarantee plus a playoff tournament and a 10 player roster. League play starts Tuesday, Oct. 9. Games are played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. For more information, call 564-5360 and ask for Jonathan. Rec. Center hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.




Cortez Rec. youth girls basketball league



The City of Cortez Parks and Recreation department is now taking registrations for third-through sixth-grade girls youth basketball. The season begins Monday, Nov. 5, and continues until Saturday, Dec. 8. Cost to participate is $20, which includes a T-shirt jersey. Registrations are being taken at the Cortez Recreation Center and will close Friday, Oct. 26. Any questions, contact Joye McHenry at 564-4080. The boys season will take place in January, 2013.




M-CHS open gym basketball



M-CHS is having basketball open gym (sponsored by M-CHS and Cortez Parks and Recreation) for anyone who wants to play at M-CHS. Open gym is on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., now through Friday, Nov. 9. For more information, please contact school activities director, Jimmie Lankford, at 565-3722 ex. 2123.
