Cortez Library announces ongoing displays for fall
Karl Looff is currently displaying his fossil wood at the Cortez Public Library. The display is titled Ancient Forests. There is also a display of Christian iconography owned by Danny Roberts. Both will be at the library until the end of September. Douglas May is displaying his collection of cartoons on the wall through the end of October.
Storytime theme is fall
Ah, Fall! is the September theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library. Storytime is held every Thursday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Thursdays. The Saturday Storytime is held, weather permitting, at the Cortez Farmers Market on the corner of Elm and Main St. Both days of the week will follow the same theme. On Saturdays there will be no craft. Lets Talk About Football will wrap up the month on Thursday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 29. Raising Readers Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.
Computer training classes in September
The Cortez Public Library will offer a series of computer training classes in September. All classes start at 1 p.m. On Thursday, Sept. 27, Internet Searching for Beginners will be taught and will include the World Wide Web, URLs, links, web browsers, toolbars on web browsers, address bar, and simple searching tips and techniques. All classes must be signed up for ahead of time, as space is limited. Sign up by calling the library or by stopping by.
Characters to Discuss October theme for Storytime

Computer training classes in October
The Cortez Public Library and the Unlimited Learning Center, 640 E. 2nd St., will offer computer classes in October. On Friday, Oct. 5, the Southwest Colorado Workforce Center staff will teach a computer class on various aspects of finding a job on the Internet, including registering with the Workforce Center; updating your Workforce registration; conducting job searches statewide; applying for unemployment insurance; resume preparation; and searching for State applications. On Thursday, Oct. 11 at 10:30 a.m. there will be a Basic Computer Class at the Unlimited Learning Center. At 1 p.m. there will be a class on using Google and Google Apps at the library. On Thursday, Oct. 25 at 10:30 a.m. there will be a Basic Computer Class at the Unlimited Learning Center. At 1 p.m. at the library there will be a class on Word. All classes at the library must be signed up for ahead of time, as space is limited. Sign up by calling the library or by stopping by. Local author Nusser gives book talk and signing
Mancos Public Library is hosting a book talk and signing by local author, Sharlene Nusser, on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. The book, Burn Valley Vengence was released in June of this year and is a mystery set locally in western Montrose County. Come by the library and hear her passionate views about libraries, reading, writing and listen to her read from her novel. She will bring a sampling of her quilt work and hang one of her art quilts at the library for the month of October. Free and open to the public.
Banned Book Week literary event
Mancos Public Library will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Banned Book Week Sunday, Sept. 30 to Saturday, Oct. 6. This annual event highlights our freedom to chose and freedom to read. It has grown into a premier literary event and a national awareness and advocacy campaign around censorship. Come by and check out a banned or challenged book and see what they are and why they were banned!
After-school movies on Mondays
The Mancos Public Library will be showing the following movies at 4 p.m. on Mondays after school in October: Oct. 1 Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2 hours, 20 minutes); Oct. 8 Two episodes of the Last of the Airbenders; Oct. 15 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (2 hours); Oct. 22 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (2 hours and 4 minutes); Oct. 29 Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (2 hours and 14 minutes). This is for ages eight and above and are fee.
Outdoor Adventures after-school activities program
The Mancos Public Library presents: Outdoor Adventures at the Mancos Public Library, a no child left inside, place-based, experiential education inspired after-school program. This program will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. and will follow the Mancos school district calendar. The first session will be on Thursday, Oct. 4. Enrollment is limited so please sign up early. This program has been developed by a team of educators, biologists, artists,outdoor recreation specialists, and librarians who believe kids need an opportunity to explore, build, hike, create and work together in a kid centered community in the outdoors. Although supervised by adults, the activities will be derived by the interests and passions of the kids. Children ages 9-12 are encouraged to enroll. Each child must be able to walk/hike 2 miles over mildly rough terrain in all weather. A healthy snack will be provided. The cost is $20 for the entire length of the program and scholarships are available. To register and for more information, call the library.
Turtle Lake Refuge author presents on wild harvested food
Mancos Public Library is excited to announce a free evening with Katrina Blair, Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. Katrina began studying wild plants in her teens when she camped out alone for a summer with the intention of eating primarily wild foods. She later wrote The Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants of the San Juan Mountains for her senior project at Colorado College. In 1997 she completed a MA at John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, Calif. in Holistic Health Education. In 1998, Katrina founded Turtle Lake Refuge in Durango. The Refuge is a non-profit organization whose mission is to celebrate the connection between personal health and wild lands. Turtle Lake Refuge opens as a wild harvested, locally grown and living foods café every Tuesday and Friday. Katrina teaches sustainable living practice classes through John F. Kennedy in California, San Juan College in New Mexico, and Fort Lewis College in Durango. She is the author of Local Wild Life Turtle Lake Refuges Recipes for Living Deep.
