Coming off a 2011 campaign that saw the Blue Jays go winless, the middle school football team has had a lot to play for. Winning their first two games and losing the next two games put the Blue Jays in a must win situation Thursday night in Mancos against Nucla. The Blue Jays rose to the challenge and won a hard fought 26-14 game. Led by a strong ground game, the Blue Jays controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides and were able to control the clock throughout the game in a hard fought battle.
The Jays now boast a record of 3-2 and are on their way to having their first winning season since 2006. The Jays have two final games on Oct. 8 against Dolores and Oct. 11 against Towaoc.
The team has bought into the scheme this year and have a no quit attitude, said coach Alan Mathews. To see their improvement in such a short period has been remarkable. This group of young men show up every night with the intention of getting a little better with every practice. The staff is proud of these young men and what theyve accomplished thus far.We would love to see the entire community at the two final games.
