Editor:
I am voting yes on Bond Issue 3B on November 6 because a new high school will directly benefit all members of our community.
Every day, graduates of Montezuma-Cortez High School impact lives by transporting patients from injury scenes to the hospital, communicating patient messages to doctors, filling prescriptions, or administering life-saving medications in the hospital. They patrol our streets and highways to make Cortez a safe place to live. They deposit our paychecks and complete complicated bank loan paperwork. Our graduates facilitate the sale and purchase of our real estate and write insurance for our cars, homes and businesses. They build us safe structures to live and work in, and make sure that plumbing and wiring are done to code specification. All of these jobs require communication skills, the ability to follow complex regulations, and the use of computers or computerized equipment to obtain and document information.
If we want these important roles filled by competent individuals, then we must provide a quality education in our community. A new high school building does not teach our students, but a state-of-the-art facility is an important factor in retaining and recruiting excellent administrators and teachers who are responsible for educating our future work force and community leaders. A new facility would provide the technical capability for the use of computers in all classrooms and provide the space and climate-controlled setting that is conducive to a modern learning environment.
Vote yes on 3B in November. We all benefit!
