Members from the Cortez FFA Chapter attended the 31st annual Hesperus Leadership Conference Sept. 25 and 26. Members from Dolores, Dove Creek, Durango, and Ignacio FFA chapters also attended.
The conference focused on building leadership, communication, teamwork, and listening skills for the students who attended. Shelby McCracken and Clay Miller, former Colorado State FFA officers from Colorado State University, traveled to the conference to be presenters. They created a well thought-out presentation and activities for the FFA members to practice leadership skills and begin putting them to use in real life.
FFA members also had the opportunity to compete against other chapters in a volleyball tournament. Pool, ping pong, checkers and other games were also available for members to enjoy in between workshops. The first day of the conference concluded with a dance.
A miniature college fair was also held during the conference. Colleges that provided information on agricultural careers and programs included Otero Junior College, Colorado State University, Northeastern Junior College, Fort Lewis College, and Lamar Community College. The Northeastern Junior College recruiter put on a presentation about how to pick your ideal college. The college fair and presentation was a great way to end the conference.
Finally, Landan Wilson, the Cortez FFA Chapter president, was elected president of the FFA District III.
