Reality arrives on the wind

Nothing like Mother Nature to reset a national agenda.

Superstorm Sandy hit hard and fast through a wide swath of red, blue and swing states, with zero regard to the latest polls.

We note with blessed relief that presidential candidates avoided politicizing this disaster and focused attention on what really matters.

That’s a welcome sentiment in these final campaign days.

No one can say who will win Tuesday’s election. No one can say for sure what will happen to our nation after this election.

But we know with absolute certainty that the East Coast storm region will recover.

Why?

Because Americans have proven themselves time after time with overwhelming compassionate responses to disasters in every region, red, blue or whatever.

Because America has in place experienced government, private and faith-based relief agencies that work together and enjoy deep, non-partisan support.

Because millions of dollars already are flowing from red, blue and swing states into Red Cross and Salvation Army storm disaster funds.

After a year — two in Iowa — of hopeless laments about political gridlock, Mother Nature provides another example for Americans to prove there is no compassion gridlock. When the goal is seizing or maintaining power, Americans struggle mightily. When it comes to helping each other, our nation shines.

You can shine, too, with a contribution to storm relief efforts. Consider it not just disaster relief, but an investment in the American spirit.

We believe Mother Nature would approve of this message.
