Fort Lewis College has joined a growing number of agencies to close public lands and impose fire restrictions.
The college has closed trails and open space on campus, including the Nature Trail, Sky Steps, Rim Trail and the disc golf course. Essentially, unless an area on campus is paved or has sprinklers, it is closed.
FLC also banned smoking and open fires on campus. People can smoke in their private vehicles.
The U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, La Plata County, Southern Ute Indian Tribe and city of Durango have also enacted fire restrictions or emergency land closures as a result of extreme fire danger.
In the city of Durango, all open space, natural lands, reservoirs, trails or other public lands owned, operated or managed by the city, except as specifically exempted, are closed for all purposes.
Under the city’s emergency order, smoking is prohibited in or on all city-owned, operated or managed property. Also, all fires of any kind on public or private property within the city are prohibited.
