Truck hauling Gold King Mine sludge crashes into Cement Creek

EPA just started hauling waste from treatment plant to new storage site

A truck hauling sludge from the Superfund site north of Silverton went off the side of the road and landed in Cement Creek about 2 p.m. Monday on San Juan County Road 110 north of Silverton. Sludge and oil from the truck entered the creek, but it wasn’t considered to be particularly toxic, according to the Silverton Standard & the Miner. The driver was not seriously injured.
The Environmental Protection Agency says a truck hauling sludge from the Gold King Mine treatment plant spilled about 9 cubic yards of treated mine waste into Cement Creek. EPA says the sludge is non-hazardous.
