Heading into its homecoming game against Sangre de Cristo on Sept. 28, members of the Mancos High School football team were focused on tuning out distractions and taking care of business.
Mission accomplished for the Bluejays, who rushed for 286 yards and eight touchdowns during a resounding 64-8 victory. Senior Chance Garcia led the charge with 184 rushing yards and five touchdowns, and freshman Chase Moore rushed for 28 yards and two touchdowns.
Mancos raced to a 40-0 lead during a dominant first quarter and led 50-0 at halftime. The Bluejays scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter to move ahead 64-0 before letting off the gas during the final frame.
The Bluejays were led defensively by sophomore Colt Fury, who was credited with 13 tackles. Garcia had 11 tackles for the Bluejays. Senior Hunter Hoover was credited with half of a sack.
Now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the A-8 Mountain League, the Bluejays will turn their attention to what could be a season-defining road matchup against Sanford on Oct. 5. Sanford will enter the contest with a 5-0 record overall.
Mancos was ranked fifth in the Colorado High School Activity Association’s latest eight-man football poll, and Sanford High School was ranked sixth.
