Drivers traveling over Red Mountain Pass will experience lengthy closures Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, while Colorado Department of Transportation crews repair cliff wall netting above U.S. Highway 550, about 3 miles south of Ouray.
The closures will affect northbound and southbound traffic for four hours in the morning and afternoon. Drivers will have one hour at noon to travel through the work zone.
The highway will close from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The highway will be open from noon to 1 p.m.
On all three days, southbound traffic will stop just north of Bear Creek Tunnel. Because of safety concerns, the public cannot access the scenic overlook near Bear Creek Bridge or Bear Creek Trail.
On Monday and Tuesday, northbound traffic will stop just north of Engineer Pass Junction, allowing access to Engineer Pass Road.
On Thursday, northbound traffic will stop at Ironton near Crystal Lake to allow for helicopter operations to lift and transport construction equipment.
Drivers may encounter periodic closures of up to 20 minutes while crews work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on other days of the week.
The road will return to regular two-way traffic during the evenings. The targeted completion date is Nov. 1.
