The city of Cortez has received a $1,500 grant from the Colorado Tree Coalition for the Cortez Softball Complex Tree Farm.
The funds from the CTC will be matched by Cortez to establish a tree farm/arboretum. The Cortez Softball Complex has undeveloped acreage that lends itself to such a project. Cortez has plans to plant seedlings and mid-sized trees in the area and use the trees, once they mature, for planting additional trees throughout the city and its park system.
Thanks to ongoing financial and administrative support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and the Colorado State Forest Service, dues-paying members, and financial partners, the CTC has awarded 424 grants totaling more than $624,000 since 1991. These grants have been matched with more than $7.5 million in community money and time. As a result of these grants, more than 67,000 trees have been planted throughout the state.
