BLM presents plan to save Gunnison sage grouse

Cooperation with private landowners is key, officials say
During mating season, Gunnison sage grouse males display their filoplumes (topknot), bulging air sacs, white breasts and spiky tail feathers to attract hens. Males will fight to defend their areas on the lek, an open area with nearby cover for fast escapes.
Bureau of Land Management wildlife biologist Nate West answers questions about the Gunnison sage grouse at a meeting in Dove Creek on Oct. 18. The rare bird is found in Southwest Colorado and was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 2014. The BLM recently released a plan to further protect the bird.
