Mesa Verde acquires Rockefeller’s Native American art collection

115 works from the Southwest are now in the public realm

The estate of David Rockefeller recently donated 115 works of art to Mesa Verde National Park, including a circa 1924 red-on-red bowl created by an unknown artist in San Ildefonso Pueblo and a 1926 oil on canvas painting by Eanger Irving Couse called “Near Shady Brook Inn.”
“Kachina Dancer,” a watercolor painting by Jemez Pueblo artist Jose Rey Toledo, is one of 115 works of art recently donated to Mesa Verde National Park from the Estate of David Rockefeller. Rockefeller purchased the painting in 1934 at Grand Canyon National Park during an entomological expedition.

John D. Rockefeller purchased the pottery directly from Martinez during trips to the Southwest in the 1920s.
