The Mancos Opera House hosted Mardi Gras Mancos Style Jan. 26. There was local food from area restaurants, a cash bar, and a King Cake with a surprise baby in one of the pieces. Whoever finds the baby was crowned king or queen. Tickets were $30 per person. The Mardi Gras party was a fundraiser for the restoration of the Mancos Opera House, located at 136 W. Grand Ave.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers say they have a lot more questions than answers about a Fish and Wildlife Service announcement that the Gunnison Sage Grouse is about to become an endangered species. Fish and Wildlife personnel called a meeting in Dove Creek on Jan. 31.
"Almost half of our assessed value is oil and gas," said Commissioner Ernie Williams. "If you limit development, you're definitely having a tremendous impact on the County."
The county is working on a socioeconomic impact study.
Along with the article, the Dove Creek Press ran a photograph taken in 1928 of a hunting party posing with 53 sage hens killed over a two-day hunt.

Ines Papert, who won first place in the mixed climbing and speed climbing female divisions, turned around and gave her winnings from the speed competition back to the Ouray Ice Park.
"We handed her an envelope and she turned around and handed it right back to us as a donation to the Ouray Ice Park," OIPI President Mike MacLeod said. "It was an incredibly generous gesture."

A public hearing will be held in Monticello on Thursday, Feb. 7 to hear public comment about a US Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to designate the Gunnison sage grouse as an endangered species. The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. at the Monticello High School cafeteria. The proposal for an endangered species designation was announced on Jan. 11. The announcement opens a 60-day comment period where residents can make their opinions known on the proposal. More than 70,000 acres of private land in San Juan County may be designated as critical habitat for the sage grouse.
