Drivers traveling from Durango to Ouray via U.S. Highway 550 should plan to take another route Thursday as the Colorado Department of Transportation closes the highway for the entire day to allow an oversized crane to reinstall downed electrical lines. The crane will take up both northbound and southbound lanes at Red Mountain Pass.
Today, the highway will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. with a one-hour window to pass through from noon to 1 p.m.
Drivers traveling from Durango to Ouray should consider an alternate westerly route via Colorado Highway 145 through Telluride on Thursday. Northbound travelers from Durango will be able reach Silverton, and southbound travelers from Ridgway will be able to reach Ouray during the closure.
