Throughout its home game against Durango High School on Dec. 18, the Mancos High School girls basketball team faced a full-court press that included traps and turnovers.
The result was an uneven performance by the Lady Jays, who didn’t find an offensive rhythm and lost 48-17. Among the bright spots for Mancos was a solid performance by sophomore Madi Hale, who converted several long jump shots and scored 10 points.
Also positive for Mancos was the team’s ability to maintain its energy after a difficult first quarter that ended with Durango leading 10-0. Over the course of eight minutes in the second quarter, the Lady Jays hung tough and were outscored 11-9.
Senior Taylor Dossey led Durango in scoring with 12 points, and freshman Sydney Flores scored eight for the Demons. Mancos sophomore Tia Imel played standout defense and came away with several steals.
Mancos captain Ericka Peacock also delivered a solid performance as the senior scored six points and showed the leadership that has earned respect from teammates and opponents in the past four years.
With the loss, Mancos’ record dropped to 0-8 on the season. Durango improved to 3-6. With the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule complete, Mancos will look to improve on the practice floor in advance of its next contest, which will take place on the road against Norwood on Jan. 11.
