A former Durangoan will take center stage on NBC’s new game show.
“The Titan Games,” which debuted Thursday, puts contestants through extreme tests of strength and endurance in head-to-head battles.
One competitor may be familiar to some Durangoans: 28-year-old Matthew Welbourn.
Welbourn moved to Durango in 2000, at the age of 10, and attended Miller Middle School and Durango High School. He was active in many sports, including basketball, cross-country and track.
Last year, Welbourn said he saw an Instagram post from Duane “The Rock” Johnson, host of “The Titan Games,” looking for people to audition for the new show.
Welbourn sent in an audition tape, went through the selection process, which included a 12-hour physical test, and was ultimately picked to compete.
Welbourn was not on Thursday’s show and is not allowed to say when he’ll appear or what the outcome of the contest was. The show will feature 10 episodes and 64 contestants, who will be whittled down over the series.
“It was just a crazy experience, especially from being a small-town guy then going into a situation like that where you’re competing on national television and in front of a live audience,” he said.
Because the show is new and contestants didn’t know what to expect going in, Welbourn said the hardest part was preparing.
“We didn’t get any information on what it was going to be,” he said. “So it’s very difficult to prepare for something when you don’t know what you’re preparing for. You have to speculate, and work on your weak areas.”
Still, he is happy with the outcome.
“The show turned out amazing,” he said. “It was just a surreal experience.”
