This past Saturday, Dove Creek hosted their annual youth wrestling tournament. Close to 500 youth wrestlers laced up their shoes in hopes of a gold medal, with teams from all over the Four Corners attending.
Our local Mancos youth team is in their 3rd season after bringing back the program in 2011. The wrestling club has over 40 wrestlers, and 31 wrestlers competed on Saturday with many earning medals. Seven wrestlers brought back gold.
"The kids did an outstanding job at all ages." said coach Alan Mathews. "They continue to grow and pick up new techniques each week. We have so many wrestlers that we have split the team into two separate practices. We are just excited to see the growth of the program. It takes many people to make this machine run. The support from the parents is a large factor in this program's success. We have people that will do anything they can for our kids."
The team will compete locally at the Cortez Cobra youth tournament on March 23. The younger wrestlers start at 9 a.m. and the older wrestlers start at noon.
"We would like to invite our entire community to come out and support the wrestlers. It's safe to say that Mancos has a bright future in the arena of wrestling." said Mathews.
