Local wrestlers hold their own at Butch Melton Invitational

M-CHS senior Matthew Broughton wins five matches on his way to 152-pound title
Montezuma-Cortez 170-pounder Kerwin Tom prepares to turn Ignacio’s Clay Campbell onto his back Saturday at IHS’ Butch Melton Memorial Invitational. Tom would indeed make the stick, and go on to place fifth at the weight via a 12-1 defeat of Bayfield’s Shane Moore.
Montezuma-Cortez 138-pounder Anthony Abeyta goes for the pin against Farmington Piedra Vista’s Chadin Groen Saturday at the Ignacio’s Butch Melton Memorial Invitational. Abeyta would pin Groen 1:02 into the second period, and later earn fifth place at the weight via a 6-0 win over Cedaredge’s A.J. Robidoux.
Montezuma-Cortez 195-pounder Kale Hall nearly backs Shiprock’s Jaylon Begay into pinning position Saturday at Ignacio’s Butch Melton Memorial Invitational. Begay would manage to escape and notch a pin.
