Cortez arts committee creates brochures, walking tours for city’s 40 murals
Artist Karen Kristen painted “Five Horses” on the south wall of Sky Art Studio Gallery, 105 N. Sligo St. “What I love about that is Kristen is such a fabulous sky artist that the clouds that are in the sky just sort of blend in to the actual sky and it makes the mural so much more three dimensional,” said Heidi Brugger, a member of the Cortez Public Arts Advisory Committee.
The eye-catching neon sign at Cork N Bottle, 443 E. Main St., isn’t the only work of art at the liquor store. Artists Automne Mosher and Arica Dean created a mural called “Designated Driver” on the western wall, “It’s on the west wall of the Cork N Bottle and features Sam Adams and Jack Daniels sitting at a table with a bunch of others, drinking, and off to one side is Cary Nation with her ax and a beautiful car,” said Heidi Brugger, a member of the Cortez Public Arts Advisory Committee. “She’s there to take out the alcohol, but the sign says she’s the designated driver.”
Artist Buford Wayt created a large mural on the northern wall of the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St. “That has put us on the map, that mural has,” said Sonja Horoshko, chairwoman of the Cortez Public Arts Advisory Committee. “It’s so well-done.”
Five artists and 10 student apprentices created “Four Seasons and a Banquet” on the northern and western wall of the Montezuma Food Coalition at North and Beech streets.“It branded that building so when it truly becomes a food hub there, it will be very easy to find at North Street and Beech,” said Sonja Horoshko, chairwoman of the Cortez Public Arts Advisory Committee. “It reflects the local food and agriculture and ranching that provides the nutritional food for the community.”
Artist Kathleen King painted “Four Seasons” on the west wall of Slaven’s True Value Hardware, at 237 W. Main St. The mural was part of the city of Cortez’s mural program.
Notah Dineh Trading Co. commissioned artist Laurence Spencer to create a Navajo rug mural on the western wall of the trading post in the summer of 2018.

Artist Brad Goodell created “Harvest Time: McElmo Peaches” on the eastern wall at West Main and South Elm streets. It sits across from the parking lot where the Cortez Farmers Market takes place.
