In the February Mancos School Board meeting, one board member, Beverly Humiston, was censured for two activities. First, she made a remark that was considered derogatory. Second, she disclosed personal information about school personnel that was not meant to be for the public. Other board members heard the derogatory comment when she allegedly used the term "wetback".
Regarding the personnel information, "She took that information and publicly redistributed it in a public setting," board president Monty Guiles said.
Humiston will not receive any more confidential employee information, or be permitted access to any information, "pending reasonable assurance that she will comply with confidentiality requirements in the future."

It could cost $50,000 to repair the heating system at Seventh Street Elementary School in Dove Creek. Maintenance Supervisor Larry Crawford told the School Board he requested a rough estimate from a plumbing company and that was the figure to replace piping under the school that carries hot water. Crawford said the boilers were updated and repaired a few years ago and still in good shape, but the pipes that carry the hot water to radiators are leaky.

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service has notified the Dolores County Commissioners that they will extend the comment period on Gunnison sage grouse to April 2. The County has requested a 60-day extension, but that was denied because of a "tight deadline to complete the determination until Sept. 30." They said there will be a second opportunity to comment during the 30-day comment period for Economic Analysis for proposed critical habitat, which is expected to occur in May.

The Board of Ouray County Commissioners identified at least 15 stakeholders with an interest in County Road 361 in a recent meeting. Crowded conditions recently on CR 361 led the county road department to erect a sign near Senator Gulch gate stating that climbing was not allowed within 60 feet of the road. The climbing community questioned why they were being singled out as the other stakeholders attended a recent meeting included, mining representatives, rock and ice climbers, hikers, four-wheel drive rental companies, runners, mountain bikers, guides and backcountry skiers, just to name a few. And, six Ouray County high school seniors will enter the military following graduation this year. Those planning to join are: Weston Patton, Chris Williams, Corbyn Robinson, Kyle Cotton, Billy McCarty and Kade MacDougall.

The Silverton-San Juan Fire Authority unveiled preliminary plans for a $470,000 fire department building north of the Carriage House this week, and the proposal was greeted positively by Town Council members and county commissioners. The 7,200-square-foot building would include four bays to house fire department equipment, including the recently acquired ladder truck. Fire Chief Gilbert Archuleta said the building could be financed with payments of $25,000 a year, using some of the revenue from the county's 1 percent sales tax dedicated to emergency services.
