Law enforcement officers are looking for a man who led deputies on a 100-mph chase Wednesday night before crashing his car just south of the New Mexico state line and fleeing on foot.
La Plata County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop the vehicle about 8 p.m. in the 3000 block of U.S. Highway 550, about three miles north of the state line. The suspected driver, who authorities did not identify, allegedly has a warrant for prior driving restraints, alcohol-related violations and failure to appear in court, said Chris Burke, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.
When a deputy turned on his emergency overhead lights, the driver fled south on Highway 550 toward the state line, Burke said.
The chase lasted about three minutes before the suspect crossed the state line and turned off his headlights, Burke said. The driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed, Burke said.
The man fled from the crashed vehicle with a dog. He was tracked by La Plata County and San Juan County sheriff’s deputies. Law enforcement officers were looking for the man as of Thursday afternoon. It is possible the man was picked up by someone in another vehicle.
The man has a history of violence and driving under the influence, Burke said.
