One person was arrested Monday evening after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase in Durango, according to the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a Nissan sedan in the 28000 block of U.S. Highway 550 near Trimble Spa and Natural Hot Springs at 6:56 p.m. Monday for driving 88 mph in a 60-mph zone, said Chris Burke, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.
The driver, Tyler Smith, 23, led law enforcement officers down county roads 203, 252 and 250 before the chase entered Durango city limits near 32nd Street and Florida Road (County Road 240), Burke said.
Smith was arrested on charges of eluding police, criminal impersonation and violating parole.
Speeds reached 70 mph during the pursuit, Burke said. Durango Police Department and Colorado State Patrol were also involved.
Law enforcement stopped their pursuit at 7:22 p.m. on Florida Road in the interest of public safety, Burke said.
Sheriff’s deputies found the Nissan abandoned near where law enforcement stopped chasing it, Burke said. After “extensive investigation,” deputies arrested Smith in the 100 block of County Road 232.
