Mancos Opera House restorations begin

Owners, Creative District offer tours ahead of construction
The Mancos Opera House was built in 1910. Its second floor provided a space for community gatherings, shows and even basketball.
While the second floor of the Opera House doesn’t have fixed floor seating, because of the multi-purpose nature of the space, it does have some seating in the balconies above the theater.
Philip Walters and his wife, Linda, purchased the Mancos Opera House 2017 when it came on the market. They had been involved in its preservation efforts since they moved to Mancos in the late 1990s, and wanted to ensure that the building stayed in the community, he said.
Philip Walters takes Opera House visitors behind the stage during the all-day open house on Saturday.
Graffiti from actors and performances past covers the panels behind the stage.
Diane Hall – now better known as Diane Keaton –lived at the Opera House for some months in 1965 and 1966 along with three other young actresses. She left her mark in the “green room” below the stage where they stayed.
Philip and Linda Walters plan on preserving the graffiti covering the walls of the “green room,” Philip said during the Saturday tour.
More “green room” graffiti from decades past.
The Opera House used to house a drugstore along with a grocery and meat market on the ground floor. Since the space behind the former grocery is not under the theater on the second floor, the renovators are considering using the area for a commercial kitchen.
Philip and Linda Walters are looking to use the west store bay on the ground floor for concessions, a bar, and ticketing.
