WASHINGTON — Sen. Mark Udall and U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn might get the chance to rub elbows with royalty at the Warrior Games in Colorado Springs this weekend.
British Prince Harry will be in Colorado for the Warrior Games, a competition between injured or ill military personnel, on Saturday and Sunday for the opening ceremony and volleyball and cycling exhibitions, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.
About 35 British veterans will also compete, according to USA TODAY.
Udall, D-Colo., and Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, are slated to make remarks during the opening ceremony on Saturday, according to Beth Bourgeois, associate director of public relations at the U.S. Olympic Committee.
“It’s great that he is coming out to highlight this event,” Udall spokesman Mike Saccone said of Prince Harry’s participation in the Warrior Games.
The events will take place at the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs — the heart of Lamborn’s district.
“It’s an honor for Colorado Springs to host these annual games,” Lamborn spokeswoman Catherine Mortensen said. “It’s just a great opportunity for the world to see Colorado Springs.”
Prince Harry isn’t the only celebrity to go to the games — First Lady Michelle Obama attended in 2012.
“It just elevates the importance of this event,” Mortensen said of such high-level guests.
Prince Harry, 28, served in the British Army and recently flew helicopter missions in Afghanistan.
He will also visit Washington, D.C., New York, New Jersey and Connecticut during his time in the U.S.
Udall is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Lamborn is on the House Armed Services and Veterans Affairs committees.
