Rockfall northeast of Dolores rattles neighborhood

Area will be reinspected for hazards
This 8.5 million-pound boulder fell from a cliff band above Colorado Highway 145 northeast of Dolores on May 24. Gov. Jared Polis announced it will be named Memorial Rock because it came down at the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend.
Local resident Jim Ellson witnessed the massive rockfall that occurred on Colorado Highway 145 while fishing at a nearby pond with his son.
This separated portion of a cliff face in the Dolores Valley northeast of Dolores broke off into two massive boulders May 24. The boulders tumbled down the valley side, and took out a portion of Colorado Highway 145.
Traffic on Colorado Highway 145 at mile marker 21 is restricted to one-lane alternating travel because of a massive rockfall.
