Summer is definitely upon us and we need to be sure that we are ready to attract and receive business in our community. There are some new businesses in the Valley that should be in the Mancos Valley business directory at the Chamber of Commerce website, www.mancosvalley.com. Please, check out the website and make sure you are in the business directory. If not, call the Chamber of Commerce at 533-7434 or stop by the Visitor Center at 101 E. Bauer. You can also send an e-mail to chamber@mancosvalley.com. You do not need to me be a Chamber of Commerce member to be in the business directory.
However, if you are a member, double-check that the information we have for you in the business directory is up to date and complete. Chamber members, be aware that you can have your logo and a photograph included on your page as well as text and a Google Map. The business directory was developed to encourage people to shop local. If residents are aware of the services and products available in the Mancos Valley, they are more likely to shop here. Synergy is a force that is happening in Mancos. But, what is it? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "synergy is a mutually advantageous conjunction or compatibility of distinct business participants or elements (as resources or efforts)." Huh? And, what does that mean? Basically, it means that folks come together and create something that is greater than the sum of their individual efforts. For example, people from a variety of backgrounds and interests came together under the umbrella of the Heritage Project and began landscaping along the highway corridor and even arranging to have a western theme mural painted on a building. There is no way that an individual person or organization could do this alone but when we join forces it is possible. All this effort was meant to make Mancos look more welcoming and inviting to tourists and residents. Some of the organizations involved included the Town of Mancos, the Mancos Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Mancos Valley Arts Council, Mancos Liquor, Western Excelsior and interested citizens from the community who donated time and/or money to the Heritage Project.
There are still more projects to be tackled. The Trails Master Plan is on the list. In 2012, the Town worked with DHM Design Corp. to create a Trails Master Plan, funded in part through a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado. It's now time to take actionable steps to implement the projects outlined in the plan. Volunteers interested in being a part of the Mancos Trails Group should plan to attend a meeting on Monday, June 17, at 6:00 p.m. at the Community Center.
Community volunteers are also coming together to groom our parks and public spaces to make them more inviting. The garden volunteers will weed, mulch and water the three flower beds in Boyle Park on Sunday, June 23. Bring gloves, tools, and water. We'll start at 8 a.m. but feel free to come whenever you can. The garden volunteers will be sponsored by the Town of Mancos. They don't have a name yet and are looking for ideas. Stop by the Mancos Farmer's Market on Thursday June 27.
They will happily share information about the club and possibly try to recruit you to get involved. The garden volunteers will also have plants for sale. Please, consider donating your extra plants and divisions to help support their activities.
