A 25-year-old Cortez man was in stable condition Monday morning at Southwest Memorial Hospital after suffering broken bones in a head-on collision Sunday night at the intersection of U.S. Highway 160 and U.S. Highway 491.
Cortez Police Department Lt. Andy Brock said Carlton Johnson, 25, of Cortez was transported to the hospital after a head-on collision with a semitrailer at 9:01 p.m. Sunday at the West Y.
Johnson suffered multiple broken bones including broken ribs, Brock said.
The driver of the semitrailer, Noel Elias, 52, of Clovis, New Mexico, was cited for careless driving causing bodily injuries, Brock said.
Elias entered the Broadway intersection on a yellow light and hit Johnson’s Kia, Brock said. Johnson was on Main Street and making a turn onto Broadway.
Several other people were mentioned in an unfinished police report concerning the incident, but Brock said he was unsure whether the additional people were passengers in the vehicles or were witnesses.
