The Mancos school board will soon have a vacancy, as former Treasurer Ed Whritner has announced his resignation.
He will be taking on the newly created position of project-based learning coordinator for the Mancos School District RE-6. The school board vacancy will be filled by appointment for the remainder of Whritner’s term, which expires in November.
“I would like to thank you all, as professionals and friends,” Whritner wrote in his resignation letter. “I want to have a lasting impact on this community. My experience as a board member, and the discussions we’ve had, have helped me understand our community better.”
Whritner has served on the board since December 2017. He has also been a humanities teacher in Cortez and Durango since 2010.
Whritner will be stepping into the role of PBL coordinator, a new position recommended by Superintendent Brian Hanson to keep the district’s project-based learning push moving forward. Project-based learning is a teaching style that emphasizes student projects and experiential learning.
Registered electors interested in assuming Whritner’s post can send a letter with a statement of interest and qualifications to the school board by July 11. Prospective candidates will be interviewed at a public meeting later in July.
Whritner’s resignation was made effective June 19. His term expires in November, along with two fellow board members: Secretary Pamela Coppinger and Director Timothy Hunter.
“I look forward to more conversations with you all about how we continue to better the lives of young people in Mancos,” Whritner wrote.
