For most young professional boxers, getting the opportunity to fight on the undercard of a boxing legend is nothing more than a dream. For Cortez boxer Zamir Young, that dream will soon become a reality.
On June 28, Young (1-1-1) will lace up his gloves for the fourth time as a professional and square off against undefeated opponent Grant John (2-0-0), at the Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio.
For Young, the fight will be especially significant because it precedes a main event that features former world-champion and boxing legend, James “Lights Out” Toney. With a solid performance in front of what will likely be a large crowd, Young could take a major step towards becoming relevant in the professional boxing world.
Although Young was always interested in boxing, he did not begin training until after he graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 2009.
Once he began working out in the gym, Young quickly took to the sport.
“Boxing was great because it taught me how to carry myself,” Young said. “You have to be disciplined to maintain your conditioning and your weight. That discipline has carried over to the rest of my life.”
After countless hours in the gym and a five-fight amateur career, Young turned pro in 2012.
Although he lost his first fight by unanimous decision, Young continued working hard. When the opportunity to fight on Toney’s undercard presented itself, Young quickly signed on.
“It’s an honor to be fighting on James Toney’s undercard,” said Young. “(Toney) is a scary dude. I would love to ask him a few questions if I get the chance. It would be cool to get to know him a little bit.”
In anticipation of his upcoming fight, Young has been training, running, jumping rope and working with the speed bag.
“I’ve been working hard on my conditioning,” said Young. “This will be my first five-round fight, and I want to be sure to be fresh for all five rounds. I want to remain aggressive.”
According to trainer Fredrick Hatch Jr., Young’s work ethic is what sets him apart.
“He has worked hard ever since he came to my gym,” said Hatch Jr. “He has great drive. He wants to make it to the top. I’m doing my best to help him do that.”
Ultimately, Young sees his upcoming fight as not only an opportunity to climb the boxing ranks, but also an opportunity to have fun.
“The feeling of getting in the ring, feeling fan support, is cool,” said Young. “I feel strong and I feel like I’m in the right mindset. I’m excited.”
