A 23-year-old woman who fell about 20 feet in La Plata Canyon near the waterfall at the turnoff to Columbus Basin was loaded onto a Flight for Life helicopter shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday for transport to Mercy Regional Medical Center.
Ron Corkish, spokesman for La Plata County Search and Rescue, said the woman, whom he declined to name, suffered a hip injury. He didn’t know if she suffered any broken bones.
The woman was hiking with three other people, and the call requesting assistance from search and rescue came in about 4:10 p.m., Corkish said.
The helicopter left the scene at 6:20 p.m. en route for Mercy.
“She was in good spirits. You’re always in good spirits when the calvary gets there,” Corkish said.
Seventeen emergency responders assisted in the rescue from Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District, Durango Fire Protection District and La Plata County Search and Rescue.
