The San Miguel Sheriff’s Office and search and rescue teams have been busy this month.
On July 1, deputies and San Miguel County Search and Rescue, with assistance from Norwood EMS and Fire, rescued a Colorado woman in her 50s who was injured in an ATV accident near Lone Cone Peak outside Norwood.
Emergency responders transported her by UHV to a landing zone to rendezvous with Careflight for transport to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction. It appears the woman did not suffer life-threatening injuries, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
On July 3, sheriff’s deputies and San Miguel County Search and Rescue were dispatched to rescue a man stranded on the side of the San Miguel River after the raft he was in flipped about a mile upstream from Sawpit.
About a dozen people participated in the rescue, according to sheriff reports, including two off-duty Telluride Marshal’s Department deputies. Rescuers reached the man by boat, and because of the strong current, had the man jump into the moving raft. The other two rafters in the boat were able to self-rescue at different points in the river. The experienced rafters, all of Telluride, were wearing helmets and personal floatation devices. There were no reported injuries.
This is the second river rescue and fourth search and rescue mission in San Miguel County.
