Featured Artist for July
Shirley Diederich is the featured artist for the month of July for the Southwest Artists’ League. She is displaying her watercolors at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park St.
Storytime in July at Cortez library
“Jive into July” is the July theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the library and every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Cortez Farmers Market on the corner of Elm and Main streets (weather permitting) for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join us for the craft at 11:15 a.m. Thursdays. The Raising Readers Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative Program.

Christian Academy registration
Lighthouse Christian Academy, a ministry of Lighthouse Baptist Church, is now accepting registration for kindergarten through 12th-grade students for the 2013-14 school year. The academy offers a warm Christian environment, a well-trained teaching staff, and small class sizes. Additionally, the curriculum employed, A Beka Book, is one of the premier Christian curriculums in the nation. Classes will begin on Aug. 26.

Computer classes in July
The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St. will offer computer classes in July.
On Friday, July 12, at 1 p.m. staff from the Workforce Center will be holding a class at the Cortez Public Library on finding a job. The class will be focus on various aspects of finding a job on the Internet and using the Workforce Center.
On Thursday, July 25, at 1 p.m. the Cortez Public Library will be holding a computer class on Internet Searching. Subjects covered will include: World Wide Web, URLs, links, Web browsers, Toolbars on Web browsers, address bar, simple searching tips and techniques.

Titans Football registration
Montezuma Titans Youth Football registration for the 2013 fall season is July 13 and July 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cortez Recreation Center for grades second through sixth. Call Kyle Lester at 799-7694 for more information.
Baptist Church’s youth group to host free carwash
The Teen Impact group of Lighthouse Baptist Church will host a free car wash at Rimco on Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please come see us and get your personal vehicle washed up. Donations will be accepted. Proceeds will help with costs for teens attending camps and conferences for their spiritual growth. Dolores Methodist lunch, sale
The Dolores United Methodist Church will hold its annual “Navajo Taco Lunch, Crafts, Pie/Baked Goods and White Elephant Sale” on Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside. The cost of the taco lunch is $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
Golf tournament
Four Corners Builders Association hold its fundraising golf tournament July 13 at the Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez. This is a four-person shamble. The fee is $40 each, including lunch and range, not included cart or green fees. There will be optional purchases of mulligans and pro shots. New this year prizes for closest to pin, longest putt, longest drive and cash prize for hole-in-one. Sign-up is 7-8 a.m. Shotgun start is at 8:30 a.m. A lunch will follow the tournament during the awards/prizes on the patio at Conquistador. Hole sponsorships are available for $100. Arts, crafts sale
An arts and crafts sale will be held Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Priest Gulch Campground located on Hwy. 145 at mile marker 35.
Dove of the Desert concert
Lifeway Baptist Church at 601 N. Dolores Road invites the community to a concert given by Dove of the Desert Church on July 14 at 5:30 p.m. There will be desserts served after the concert.
Christmas in July
The Auxiliary at Southwest Memorial Hospital will be having a “Christmas in July” sale on Monday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lobby. There will be lots of new merchandise and baked goods available for purchase. Sale prices will be at least 10 percent off all items and will only apply the day of the sale. Flower Show workshop
The Mesa Verde Gardeners will host a design workshop in advance of the Montezuma County Fair and Flower Show. Helen Pruski, a design judge from Durango, will give interested participants a class on Bouquets and Dried Floral Arrangements with emphasis on line design, proportion and other basic design elements to better prepare for the Show which runs from July 31 to Aug. 3.

Insurance exchanges explained
Colorado is a leader in creating a health-care insurance exchange program for its residents under the Affordable Care Act. The program is scheduled to begin accepting applications Oct. 1, 2013, for coverage to begin Jan. 1, 2014. Learn about the application process and the various plans that are available for you, your family and/or your employees at the Chamber luncheon Wednesday, July 17, at noon at Shiloh’s Restaurant. Kent Helwig, CEO of Southwest Memorial Hospital, will explain how the exchange will work in Colorado and in Montezuma County and discuss assistance that will be available to help people navigate through the application process.

Relay for Life
Southwest Memorial Hospital will hold an old-fashioned pie auction Tuesday, July 16, at 11:30 a.m. in the hospital cafeteria. This is a benefit for the Cure for Cancer Relay for Life team. Emergency preparedness seminar
On Wednesday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m. the Dolores Public Library will be hosting an emergency preparedness seminar. The County Health Department, County Sheriff’s Office, Montezuma County Fire Chiefs Association, and American Red Cross will give short presentations and answer questions to help you prepare for wildfires, pandemics, and other disasters in our area. There will be information for kids, literature you can take home and door prizes. Similar presentations will be offered in Mancos and Cortez later in July. Dog obedience classes
The Montezuma Agility Dog Club is offering basic obedience classes for dogs 5½ months and older. Classes will be on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. and start on July 20 and continue for six weeks. Class size is limited, registration is first-come first-served. For more information call (970) 882-5404.
SouthWest Colorado Concerts tickets
Season tickets for SouthWest Colorado Concerts 2013-14 season will be on sale at the Cortez Farmers’ Market July 20 beginning at 7:30 a.m. This season begins Oct. 6 with the San Juan Symphony performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Eroica at the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium. The award winning German a cappella male quintet Vocaldente, which has wowed audiences throughout Europe, performs the second concert Nov. 12. Concert pianist Charlie Albright, winner of the prestigious 2010 Gilmore Young Artist Award, performs the third concert on March 3, 2014. The 26-member Golden Dragon Acrobats performs astounding feasts of skill and daring on May 3, 2014, to finish the season at the Cortez Middle School auditorium. Season tickets for the four-concert season are $45 for adults and $10 for youth 18 years old and younger. Intermountain Weavers to hold conference
Intermountain Weavers Conference will be holding their bi-annual conference this month at Fort Lewis College from July 25 to 28. They offer fiber related three-day workshops, two gallery shows and shopping. There will be about 25 vendors coming to the conference with yarns, roving for spinning, knitting and weaving supplies, and handwoven items for sale. This will be the 30th anniversary. The Presbyterian Woman will hold their “Back to School” Rummage Sale on Friday and Saturday, August 2 and 3. K-9 Team hosting annual pancake breakfast benefit
The K-9 Search and Rescue Team will again be sponsoring their annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 6 a.m. onward. Located at 35 Railroad Avenue in Dolores (next to the Dolores Fire Dept.), K-9 Search and Rescue Team Inc. is a 100 percent volunteer nonprofit organization that is on-call 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of weather conditions or circumstances, to assist local, state, and federal agencies in the search for missing persons.
The annual pancake breakfast is the team’s largest fundraiser and is held during August, and features a hot cooked breakfast for a small donation. The funds from the pancake breakfast help purchase and update vital equipment, and maintain basic operational readiness for when the Team is needed. Harvest Beer Festival
Sample microbrews from eight regional breweries at the foot of Mesa Verde in beautiful Cortez on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. This year’s festival will feature music by Cortez’s very own Beautiful Loser Society. Food vendors will be on hand and there will be children’s activities. All proceeds benefit Montezuma Land Conservancy, the only nonprofit land conservation organization focused on land protection in Southwest Colorado.
