Three games into its season, the Montezuma-Cortez High School girls softball team has been nearly flawless while amassing three dominant wins.
The Lady Panthers’ two latest victories came at home against Gunnison on Aug. 30 and were highlighted by explosive offense and shutdown pitching as M-CHS outscored the Cowboys 33-0 for the day.
Leading the way at the plate for the Lady Panthers in the first game of the doubleheader were Taelynn Comisky, Alyssa Cornett and Presley Frost, who each drove in two runs. Allie Kibel and Cornett both smashed one double, and Myra Simmons, Lizzie Likes and Koral Jackson each had one RBI.
Taiah Wilson delivered an impressive performance on the mound for M-CHS as the freshman pitched all five innings and struck out five Gunnison batters. Wilson, backed by solid play from her defense, did not allow a run.
In the second game, the Lady Panthers’ offense again shone bright, dominating Gunnison start to finish during a 23-0 victory that was called after three innings of play.
Among the offensive leaders for M-CHS were Hailey Veach, Kibel and Cornett, who each drove in three runs. Cornett and Kibel both had two doubles, and the Lady Panthers hit eight doubles as a team.
Ace pitcher Presley Frost started on the mound for M-CHS and did not allow an earned run over three innings. The senior struck out two batters, walked three batters and allowed four hits.
Now 3-0 on the season, the Lady Panthers will go on the road for a doubleheader against Basalt on Sept. 7. M-CHS will then return home to play Alamosa on Sept. 10.
