After dominating its competition during the first three games of its season, the Montezuma-Cortez High School softball team hit a road bump when it hit the road for a doubleheader against Basalt High School on Sept. 7.
After scoring four runs in the top of the first inning of the first game of its two-game slate, M-CHS struggled to contain Basalt’s vaunted offense and lost 16-6 in a game that was called after six innings of play.
Several Basalt players, including Corey Bullock, Gaby Magana Silva, Maya Lindgren, Kiera Larson and Zoe Vozick had multiple hits and drove in two runs for their team. Statistics were not available for M-CHS.
In the second game of the doubleheader, M-CHS remained competitive throughout much of the contest and trailed 6-4 after six innings of play before surrendering five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and losing 11-4.
The Lady Panthers were led at the plate by Myra Simmons, who smashed a double and a triple and drove in a team-high two runs. Taiah Wilson also drove in a run for the Lady Panthers while pitching all seven innings of the contest and allowing nine earned runs.
Now 3-2 on the season, the Lady Panthers will prepare for a home matchup against Alamosa High School, which will take place at Englehart Field in Cortez on Sept. 10.
