The Dolores Fire District won the overall title at the 75th annual Tri-State Fireman's Association, held in early August in Grants, N.M.
Seventeen teams from Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico competed in the events structured around various firefighting tactics. Eight members of the Dolores Fire District competed.
"Our comedy skit came in first, and that gave us the overall sweepstakes and the most points," said Dolores Fire Chief Mike Zion. "We had a good-natured routine poking fun at other teams."
It is not all fun and games during the event, Zion said. Training and classes are conducted in the mornings, and competitions are held in the afternoons.
"It is a lot of timed events rolling out hoses, hooking up to hydrants, and then shooting down targets," Zion said.
The Tri-State Firemen's Association was formed in 1938 by a group of department chiefs. The vision was to hold an event to help districts learn new techniques, share ideas, and compete against each other in events.
The 2014 Tri State Fireman's Convention will be held in Cortez.
