AZTEC – County and city crews responded to a fire near County Road 3260 midday on Sunday, with black smoke visible from New Mexico State Road 516.
Multiple districts from the San Juan County Fire Department, as well as the Aztec Fire Department, responded to the dispatch at 11:48 a.m. on Sunday, according to Devin Neeley, a spokesman for San Juan County.
First responders arrived to find a fire burning among brush and scrap in what looked to be a private junkyard. Although fire crews had the blaze contained within 15 minutes, they maintained the scene for the next hour, Neeley said.
While no official cause for the fire has been determined, multiple neighbors reported seeing someone burning weeds earlier in the day.
