One of the actions from the recent Community Summit sponsored by Mancos Valley Resources on Oct. 12 is to create a Community Task Force to Inventory the historical structures in Mancos and eventually in the Mancos Valley.
This task force will be organized by Bob Seney, professor emeritus Mississippi University for Women and vicar of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
The informational and organizational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Mancos Library Board Room. All our invited - especially our history buffs.
At the Community Summit, it was interesting to note that each of the five focus groups mentioned the historical heritage of our town and the valley as a strength for the growth and health of our community, a resource for strengthening and preserving our community, and a draw for more tourism.
Our historical structures play an important role in this heritage, yet we do not have a complete inventory of our historical structures.
This task force will seek to fill that omission, and it also will continue the discussion on the possibility of revitalizing the Mancos Historical Society or creating an alternative organization with the focus of researching and gathering information and artifacts from Mancos and Mancos Valley. There has been some interest expressed in re-creating the Historical Society.
Anyone interested is encouraged to join us as we seek to identify and document our historical structures: businesses, residential, and "back yard" structures.
