4-H Day will be on Nov. 2

The second annual 4-H Day will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 2, at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 Highway 160 in Cortez.

Experience firsthand some of the projects offered by 4-H. The family event, will include cake decorating, ceramics, rocket launch, scrapbooking, how to shoot a bow, felting and various animal projects. Concessions are available.

4-H Clubs in Montezuma County are taking member and adult volunteer enrollment through December for the 2014 program year. You can enroll online at: https://colorado.4honline.com or at 4-H Day.

Anasazi center offers tool class

Kevin Black, assistant state archaeologist, will teach a class about stone tools called Prehistoric Lithics, Description and Analysis.

It will be held the first weekend in November. Students will learn how stone tools were made in Colorado and how to identify different types of tools. The presence of tools often is the best indication of an archaeological site.

The class will be Nov. 1-4. The hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

Class will meet at the Anasazi Heritage Center west of Dolores on U.S. 145. The cost is $12..

Residents earn scholarships

The Fort Lewis College Foundation has awarded scholarships to two Mancos residents.

Anthropology major Gabe Doelger was awarded a $2,000 Foundation Scholar grant, and English major Courtney Ott, a $1,000 Dean Bader Scholarship.

The foundation holds and administers more than 70 donor scholarships with varied criteria based on merit, need, passion, goals and accomplishments. Students must qualify and apply each year in order to receive any of the elite scholarships.

Toastmaster club forming

A new Mancos Toastmasters group will hold an informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, and at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Mancos Public Library.

2013 Mancos Giving Tree

The 2013 Mancos Giving Tree, now in it's 16th year, is a community based, anonymous, volunteered effort that collects and distributes Christmas gifts to about 150 Mancos area residents each year that may not have a Christmas.

There are no age or income tests for the annual Mancos Giving Tree. Residents of Mancos Valley and students in the schools are welcome to apply. Look for applications at Mancos schools and churches. The Visitor Center also has application forms, as does Mancos Valley Bank. The chamber of commerce website (www.mancosvalley.com) has a copy posted.

Return the applications to the school office or nurse, to the Visitors Center, Mancos Valley Bank, or mail to P. O. Box 535. Applications must be received by Friday, Nov. 22. The trees will once again be at the Mancos Library, the Columbine Bar, Mancos Valley Bank, P & D and Zuma. Once the trees and ornaments are up, the Christmas shopping begins!

The Giving Tree elves ask that everyone consider shopping locally, if possible. Think retail and service and more. Favorite massage therapists, beauticians, veterinarians and more can become involved if/when their customers point the way.

Mancos Valley Resources, a local 501c3 non-profit, is once again acting as a pass through agency for the Mancos Giving Tree.
