Montezuma-Cortez High School wrestlers experienced mixed results in the competitive Warrior Classic in Grand Junction, Dec. 20-21.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Anthony Abeyta, who finished eighth at 145 pounds after winning four of seven matches.
Abeyta’s victories came against North Sevier’s Myers Miller, Durango’s Jacob Rowe, Delta’s Timothy Horn and Eagle Valley’s Manuel Heredia. Two of Abeyta’s losses came to Mountain Vista’s Aiden Cartwright, and one loss came to Grand Junction’s Cale Moore.
Austin Featherman of M-CHS finished 2-2 at 126 pounds. He beat South Sevier’s Cole Peterson and Fruita Monument’s Tyler Archuleta.
Other M-CHS wrestlers included 138-pounder Jaquin Laner, 152-pounder Ethan Root, 160-pounder Casen Allmon and 220-pounder Devan Frost – all going 0-2 in their divisions.
M-CHS finished 38th among the 44 teams in the tournament, which was won by Uintah High School of North Vernal, Utah. Rocky Mountain High School was second, and Grand Junction High School was third.
